'Thank you for giving hope to so many'

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have paid tribute to cancer-stricken BBC podcaster Deborah James, saying that she has 'captured the heart of the nation', after her fundraiser passed £3 million today.

It comes as the presenter said she is preparing to spend her final hours on her parents' lawn surrounded by family.

In a tweet, William and Kate said: 'Every now and then, someone captures the heart of the nation with their zest for life & tenacious desire to give back to society.

'Bowelbabe is one of those special people. Her tireless efforts to raise awareness of bowel cancer & end the stigma of treatment are inspiring.

'We are so sad to hear her recent update but pleased to support the Bowelbabe Fund, which will benefit the The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust among others.

'Deborah, our thoughts are with you, your family and your friends. Thank you for giving hope to so many who are living with cancer. W & C.'

I've been following Deborah's journey since her first announcement of her cancer diagnosis and that it was Stage 4. As can be expected, there were the highs and terrible lows. As with all cancer patients, Deborah fought with everything. A lovely tribute by the Cambridges.

Deborah James has been honoured with a Damehood after raising £3.8million for charity since Monday as she revealed she was receiving end-of-life care.

The Queen led praise for the 40-year-old BBC podcaster, saying she was 'pleased' to approve the damehood, while the Prime Minister said 'if ever an honour was richly deserved, this is it'.

Dame Deborah James enjoyed an afternoon of 'tea and champagne' with Prince William on Friday as he presented her with a Damehood for her tireless campaigning and fundraising efforts, which has seen £5million donated to cancer research in just four days.

The cancer-stricken mother-of-two, 40, revealed the 'surreal' meeting via her Instagram page, where she uploaded several pictures of the Duke of Cambridge with her and her family.

She told her more than 630,000 followers how 'kind' William 'made everyone feel at ease', adding that he was 'welcome back any time.'

Dame Deborah wrote: 'Prince William actually came to our family house today! I am utterly honoured that he joined us for afternoon tea and champagne, where he not only spent a generous amount of time talking to my whole family but also honoured me with my Damehood.'

She said having a royal 'pop in' was surreal and joked that the cleaning antics before his arrival were 'off the scale'.

'But it was all irrelevant because William was so kind and he put us all at ease,' she added.

'He is clearly passionate about improving oncology outcomes as the President of the Royal Marsden.

'It was such a special day for my whole family, making memories to last a life time. He's welcome back any time!'
