I really dislike these visits being referred to as a "charm offensive". It implies that they are putting on a facade rather than just being themselves.

Susan, you took the words right out of my mouth. I'm so sick of that phrase. It does imply that the Royals are merely putting on an act to win over the public. The press will keep using this stupid phrase until another stupid phrase comes to light. How about just reporting the facts, even if you are a tabloid. Sorry, my soapbox again.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge warmly greeted royal fans in Kennishead, Glasgow as they embarked on the first of their two-day tour of the country yesterday.

During their visit the couple visited the Wheatley Group site, to see first-hand how they are transforming the lives of disadvantaged or vulnerable people, including those at risk of homelessness.

As they greeted local residents after the visit, William, 39, shared an affectionate hug with local man William Burns, 66, who was overcome with emotion as he embraced the future king.

The protocol surrounding touching the Royal Family has historically been so strict that a simple breach like a hand on the back, even by a well-meaning dignitary, was enough to spark outrage.

Actually, the media were the ones who were outraged. The royal was usually not bothered at all and the thought the media was making a mountain out of a molehill because somebody took their arm or touched their back when guiding them.

Also, when William says they want to be addressed by their first names, rather than as Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, he does not mean "Call us Wills and Kate"! He wants them to be introduced and referred to as William and Catherine.

More about the hug

Mr Burns, a social housing resident who lives in Kennishead, a neighbourhood to the south of Glasgow, said he became emotional because the moment reminded when a 'son hugs a father'.

And the moment had a particular significance for Mr Burns, a father-of-six, who once fell out with one of his sons during an incident which led to him being evicted.

The eviction, which led to grandfather-of-twenty five Mr Burns briefly being made homeless, came after the tragic death of his first wife Jean, who passed away while in his arms.

So when asked about his emotional embrace with Prince William, Mr Burns said: 'I am a grandfather. It felt like a son hugging a father.

'It was the way he hugged me. I didn't expect that really to be honest. It was a boost. I've never felt anything like it in my entire life before and my existence as a human being.

The Duchess of Cambridge showed off her puzzling skills yesterday, when she helped a student crack a crossword clue - and was reportedly 'thrilled' to get it right.

According to the Times, second year statistics undergraduate Jack Baird, 21, caught the royal's attention when he waved a copy of the old puzzle in the air, and asked for her help with the one clue he hadn't managed to answer.

The clue Jack was stuck on, seven down, was about the 'sovereign’s annual allowance', and contained two words of four and five letters.

Jack said that Kate was able to succesfully provide the correct answer, which was Civil List.

'She was very excited. It didn’t look like she was going to get it for a moment. I’m really chuffed. I'm going to frame it. She looked thrilled. I think she thought, "I wouldn’t live this down if I get this wrong".'

That must have been an old crossword. The Civil List was replaced by the Sovereign's Grant 10 years ago.

William visits the Heart of Midlothian football grounds

The Duke of Cambridge, 39, met with Heart of Midlothian football club's Chief Executive Andrew McKinlay and Chair Ann Budge, during a visit to their grounds in Edinburgh to discuss mental health in sport.

During the visit the royal, who sported an open collar blue suit was gifted with shirts for each of his children, Prince George, eight, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four.

William was discussing the 'The Changing Room' initiative launched by the Scottish Association for Mental Health in 2018.

Aimed at men in their middle years, The Changing Room has been running at Hibernian Football Club and Heart of Midlothian Football Club for four years and promote men’s mental health and wellbeing through football.

Prince William has long been and advocate for increased support for mental health and runs charity Heads Together with wife Kate.

Relaxed, interested, able to draw people out, and really doing the work--yep, William's turned into a great ambassadore for his causes. And those are awesome gifts for his children. I hope we get to see photos of them wearing the jerseys.
