Both visited Aberfan the day after, 22 October 1966. The Earl was the first to visit having travelled by train overnight. The Duke of Edinburgh visited later in the day.

The Duke of Edinburgh later the same day. He had arrived with a police escort by car and had insisted he would get out of the car and walk.



The Duke later in the week accompanied a very emotional Queen and was said to have been concerned for her.
