Designed by Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s sapphire and diamond coronet was one of the most important jewels of the Queen. On her death it was inherited by her son King Edward VII, it was then passed to his son King George V who gave it to his only daughter Mary. It stayed in the Lascelles family until it was sold to pay Death Duties. The Victoria and Albert Museum though charitable contribution bought the coronet to prevent it being further sold to a foreign buyer and leaving the country.
