2007 - Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh visited historic Jamestown to commemorate the 400-year anniversary of the Settlement of Jamestown. They finally visited the College of William and Mary. The College of William & Mary was founded in 1693 by letters patent issued by King William III and Queen Mary II and it is the second-oldest institution of higher education in the United States. William & Mary College saw American Presidents Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler attend. A young George Washington also received his surveyor's license at the college in 1749 and he would become the college's first American chancellor in 1788.
