I don't think the monarchy would have ended. I think the laws would have been changed to allow female succession (I am very sure Ragnhild would have loved to have been Queen). Olav was stubborn, but Harald was even more so. Sonja has been a good Queen and an asset to Norway, even with the hideous yellow ball gowns she loves so much.
