1783 - The Order of Saint Patrick was created by HM King George III. It is a now dormant British order of chivalry due to the associations with Ireland. The Order was created at the request of the then Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, The 3rd Earl Temple, later Marquess of Buckingham. The creation of Knights of the Order lasted until 1922, when the Irish Free State was created. While the Order still technically exists, no Knight of St Patrick has been created since 1936. The last surviving knight, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, died in 1974.
