Miniature of Princess Victoria, the Princess Royal as a bejewelled angel - This brooch was designed by Albert The Prince Consort and given in 1842 as a Christmas present for his wife Queen Victoria. The brooch design was inspired by a cherub in a painting by Raphael. The brooch consists of a cut out enamel miniature of The Princess Royal clasping a string of pearls from which hangs a diamond and ruby crucifix. The bejeweled wings feature sapphires, rubies, emeralds, diamonds and topazes which are mounted at the shoulders of the cherub. The entire brooch is mounted on 18 carat yellow gold. The portrait of the Princess Royal was created by English painter William Essex from a circular miniature created by Sir William Ross.
The brooch is in The Royal Collection Trust.
