My engagement ring was a ruby surrounded by more (but smaller) diamonds, much like Diana's but a ruby like Fergie's. My husband picked it out entirely by himself, not knowing that I had always wanted a ruby engagement ring. I think the oval stone setting surrounded by diamonds was rather a "thing" in the 1980s and early 1990s, no doubt influenced by Diana's ring.
