1945 - Prince Henry, The Duke of Gloucester began his office as the 11th Governor General of Australia. He was appointed Governor-General of Australia after his younger brother, the Duke of Kent, who had been offered the position, sadly died in an airplane crash in Scotland. He held the post for two years but due to the need to act as Senior Counselor of State during a visit by King George VI and Queen Elizaveth and their daughters to South Africa.
