Wallas, like many of the classic socialites, didn't have to outright merch clothing or jewels. They owned their clothes and jewels, I'm sure Wallis and the others never had to have clothes or jewels loaned to them to merch. Just having the fashion or society columnists in WWD, Harper's, Vogue, NYT etc. was enough to give the fashion houses and jewelers business.
Whatever I think of Wallis, she had class, elegance and style.
I've written this before, when David abdicated the Throne to marry Wallis, Wallis realized then she was trapped. Here was the romantic story of a King abdicating to marry for love. The world was captivated. If Wallis refused to marry David after such a move, she would have been reviled and labeled cruel for leading David on and then rejecting him after all he did out of love for her. I don't think she was ever happy in their marriage, she was trapped.
