In The Quest for Queen Mary, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (parents of the current Duke) are quoted talking (in 1957) about Queen Mary wanting them to ask Princess Marie Louise to be godmother to one of their sons. The Duke, Queen Mary's son, adds "Of course Mamma must have known Cousin Louie would leave them [referring to any godson] her things, that's why she suggested ."

The discuss the Cartier Indian tiara which the Duchess says is too big for her. Princess Alice, Countess of Athlone, who is part of the conversation, addds "More like a mitre than a tiara, I remember."

In the end, it was Prince Richard, the current Duke, who was her godson. Louie's sister, Princess Helena, was godson to Prince William, the firstborn, who died tragically early leaving Richard to inherit the Dukedom.
