It's also good, I'd imagine, for when you're low on certain supplies, or have food allergies to dairy and/or eggs.
I have a lot of raisins, and am thinking to trying it for the heck of it. The worst that can happen is that it's not good, but it might be a keeper...we'll see.
I imagine that you can add some vanilla. Also, regular white flour is probably fine if that's what you've got.

Depression Cake
1 Cup each White, and Whole Wheat Flour
Brown Sugar, 1 Cup
H2O, 2 Cups
Oil, 2 Tablespoons
Baking Soda, 1 ½ teaspoons
1 teaspoon each, Cinnamon & Nutmeg
Raisins, 1 Cup
Preheat oven to 325.
Cook raisins in water. Simmer until 1 Cup of the liquid remains. Cool.
Cream sugar and oil.
Add raisins and liquid. Beat with a spoon.
Add dry ingredients.
Bake in a lightly oiled 9” square pan for 30-40 mins.
