The last time that I had pears, I cut them up and cooked them in a water, sugar, pinch of salt mixture. The best part was, that I waited until it was 1/2 cooked, and put in a slice of fresh ginger, then took it out once the liquid was as gingery as I wanted it, after the pot came off of the stove.
They keep in a jar or bowl in the 'fridge for a while, though I can't tell you how long, because they were eaten up pretty quickly! :-)
