Schwan’s is all frozen food and I can order anytime during a 2 week period and it will be delivered about 4pm every other Friday.
This means I need to keep my fridge & icebox and my freezer organized. Schwan’s affects my big freezer and my icebox where Imperfect foods deals mostly with fresh foods. Although I do buy some meats and a few other things that require freezing.
For example the bacon I buy is organic so no preservatives and must be kept frozen. The day I receive it I open the bacon and transfer each slice to a long strip of plastic wrap. After each stip i laid down I roll the plastic wrap over it. Then I freeze the plastic wrapped roll of plastic in the Icebox. If I want some bacon I unroll the frozen package and can easily remove one or more slices as desired. Then I rewind the package and stick it back in the icebox.
Due to humidity that varies from very high to very low from day to day… foods left on the counters may ripen quickly or even over ripen. Avocados are kept on the counter and as they ripen I use them up as avocado toast, in salads or in guacamole. The quac I can store in quart sized storage bags (I put lots of lime juice in the quac) then I flatten the back to remove as much air as possible. Close the top and roll it over and to compact the quac even more. I can then keep in the fridge or even the icebox till used up.
Potatoes, onions, carrots and other veggies I keep in the 2 lowest baskets of my fridge. Some days I discover the carrots are frozen to the sides of the basket and each other.
Peppers, cucumbers, zucchini and the like can go bad quickly as can lettuce. They don’t have Romaine year round at IMPFoods and loose leaf is not to my taste. So I have the kids buy Romaine for me at the grocery. It lasts longer. I also buy cabbage and make lots of coleslaw. I use half for slaw and half for cooking.
As for storage containers in the freezer and Icebox… I need space so rarely use plastic containers. I much prefer the storage bags. Pint, Quart & Gallon. For bulky items like meat the bags can be rolled up to fit the space available. Plastic contains need space that fits them.
I use the containers more in the icebox and fridge. As I keep the foods I use daily there.
I also freeze grated cheese. Sliced is kept in the fridge. Grated cheeses thaw enough on the counter that I can scrape off what I need and toss the bag back in the freezer.
Sometimes I miss something on the back of a shelf but I compost to nothing goes to waste. Also I freeze lemons and limes… sometimes I grate the peel and freeze in it’s own storage bag. Or store the juice in another bag - I lay it flat and can break off chunks of the juice as needed.
