Since I've got jams/preserves/jellies, as well as pickles, on my mind....
What are your top 5 favorite jams/preserves/jellies, and pickles?
What type of jam etc. I like, depends on it's use. I definitely like blackberry for just about anything...toast, mixing into yogurt, on pancakes, etc.
Also, once I discovered blueberry, I never looked back!
Raspberry is a flavor that I like with many things, from chocolate candy, to cake.
Hmmm, those are all berries. But, I also like an apricot or peach jam. Those are good for glazes on savory foods like pork chops, or in bbq sauce to brighten the flavor, especially for chicken. I like a deeper flavor, such as a spoonful of blackberry, for beef. And, of course, they are good for peach/apricot bars, thumbprint cookies, etc.
And, lastly, a really good grape. Some grape jelly/jam is a lot better than others.
As for pickles...
If I could still eat what I wanted, I would choose a barrel pickle, like from delis.
Also, dill pickle.
Tomato pickles...they are made from green tomatoes, and some are a lot better than others. Again, the best ones are made in-house at good delis. I've had jarred ones, and they were not the same at all. I finally started canning my own each year.
After that, I like pickled beets, cherry peppers...not spicy, and pepperoncini.
Pepperoncini come in various types. I'm thinking of the ones which, again, are not spicy, are flat, not Christmas light round, and are made with their own juices, not jalapeno juice.
Back in the day, when squirt bottles on the table was how you got sauce for Arby's roast beef sandwiches, not packets, the pepperoncini were in open bowls at the counter at Astroburger, where delicious onion rings and patty melts were made, that's when I became addicted to them with those foods!
Well, there was one more...
My dad bought large jars of red peppers. They were very big pieces...I think that they must have been pieces of red bell pepper. They had vinegar in them, but were also a bit sweet, and were amazing cut up in tuna. I don't remember the brand, but they stopped making them a long time ago.
How about you?
