Ds had to go to Santa Rosa yesterday. We rarely go, but he had an appt. with the neurologist. (no tests, just discussions, and plans. He wants to do an MRI etc.)
He got there early, so I asked if he wanted to go to Habitat for Humanity, to see if there was anything that he needed for the room that he's building before the baby's born, maybe saving money.
He said that it was across town from the Drs. office, but that he would go afterwards.
About an hr. later he called, and we talked while he walked through. He described a door, some flashing, etc.
Then, he said that there were a lot of new refrigerators, for about $400. A good deal, but I don't have it. It was a nice thought, because fresh veges don't fit into my tiny 'fridge. They just have to stay out, usually in my counter-top oven.
We hung up, and a short time later the phone rang again. It was Ds wanting to know how I felt about used, refurbished refrigerators. Ones about 3/4 of the size of the one of mine that went bad.
I asked how much, and he said that a shop had gone out of business, and they decided to try to move out some of the ice boxes, because they had too many. So, for 2020, they were selling the refurbished ones for $20.!
He had 2 tie-downs in his truck, and said that he'd lay out the money if we wanted it. So, I made an executive decision after asking some questions, and decided to go for it!
I asked how large the freezer is, and he said about 3/4 of the size of the old one. So, I asked about freezing things like stew, etc. I won't be able to freeze like I could in a dedicated freezer, but I will be able to put enough food in it to make my life easier, to save money, and not have food go bad.
For now, it will work. I just have to be realistic. Ds works, is not well, has to do things for his wife, and soon will have a brand new baby to be up at night with, etc. etc. I have no idea when he can unload a unit to get a freezer out, then get it here. This will give me both some freezer and 'fridge space, and I will enjoy having it.
He will bring it here today, I believe. It's in his truck, so it can hardly be overlooked.
Anyway, once again, things don't always work out as we expect, but sometimes it can be just as good. At least for a while.
