No, you definitely don't want either over or under-ripe ones to eat.

I don't know if this is what Momo has found, but Ds has been finding, the past couple of years, that there just aren't any ripe avocadoes available. It's a shame when he thinks of a meal, and they are all way too unripe to use.
He can buy them hard, and put off the meal for a few days, but there should be ripe ones available, especially during avocado season.
I've noticed that, since the fires, there have been extreme changes in availability, prices, and ripeness.
If you don't have that problem, it may be that your area is taking in Mexican avocadoes, as well. They've been advertising the Mexican ones for 2 seasons, since the fires, but we don't see much of them for some reason.
