Agree.
The Daily 49er to the Daily Current though was horrific for going backwards. I was surprised given the ideology driven mascot change that it took so long. To me, that's almost the toughest one that would cause an uproar, on top of it the blue color association made identity issues worse.
all so chaotic. at least do something like Beach Daily and get the colors right, that cannot be controversial.
there's no need to promote any nickname or mascot right now, too much political capital. "The Beach" is a slogan/nickname, not a mascot. So I'm ok, so long as they don't bring back the stupid beach ball rolling around the PYramid lol.
yikes, what a mess that Jane just made even worse, pretty much her MO. hopefully the new Pres has some common sense, can always hope. just has to start with getting rid of the ridiculous VP FInance middle man idiocy that insulates the Presdient for athletics.
hopefully we get much more than a bureaucrat apparachnik like Jane that can't lead on anything.
nothing would surprise over the summer, like Acker bailing for some assistant gig somewhere, I mean he knows he's basically 0 for 2 as it is, and jumping from last to 2nd to last at that rate that will win in 2037 lol

The dual identity thing is problematic, but it's been taking place for so long that it's almost inconsequential at this point. Steve Horn was absolutely against changing the from CSULB, and subsequent President either didn't care enough or didn't want to waste the political capital. I don't know if there is even enough of a groundswell these days to try to effectuate a name change.
Go Beach and its derivative The Beach are unique identifiers that refer back to our official university name (Originally marketed as the only University that has Beach in its name, but I think there are two Palm Beach colleges, although maybe not D1). The problem came when Beach became a mascot name, and it started getting paired with The Beach (the ridiculous The Beach Beach). I just can't beleive that Jane (or anyone in the Athletic Department) thought that was ok.
I would be ok with creating a branding around Forty-Niners as our official mascot name (based on the date of the school's founding), and avoiding the Gold Rush elements like Prospector Pete. For consistency though, we'd have to rename the Nugget and the Gold Mine, so that may be a step too far for some, but putting a little effort into a re-branding would be worth the effort if done right.

I agree with 1) that is most important
2) I would put discretionary funding support, and actually getting involved in community/business funding involvement for
a) endowment
b) arts
c) athletics
the other two listed would be nice to haves, they have clearly been irritants, but in the larger scheme of things they are 'issues' that a President would probably have to expend political capital on and create noise when the #1 issue if funding funding funding, and yes some people are not irritated to support due to the mascot fiasco
now to digress:
to me it's just not worth the political expense when a President will have the political battle / perception of funding/supporting athletics
Dirtbags is not going anywhere
Elbee name should just be shelved. unfortunately the school has so screwed up the identity with the newspaper change to "Current", Nugget will probably be replaced by some other stuipd name, although why not at least keep that one tie in. think there is still the Outpost.
or a President could simply place Prospector Pet statue in the Alumni Center as a nod to history there
me personally I don't mind the school trying to capitalzie on the confusing and marketing the multi-name chaos - it's horrible, it's confusing, make fun of yourselves in a productive marketing way. Just get rid of the ELbee idiotic name even if there is a Shark, - it doesn't need some contrived stupid name.
other than sports should have "The Beach" make that official "Go Beach" is so entrenched. don't try to make it a nick name. Go Beach has always been good marketing. regardless of Dirtbags, Beach, Shark, Pete - fans are pretty much in concert with Go Beach as a slogan, even before dirtbags and the shark ever got in the mix.
I wish at the new student center they would make like a mascot plaque circle or section with putting Prospector Pete there, a Shark, a Dirtbag, and Beach - it's history embrace it for what it is. My god if anybody is truly offended or 'scared' about that Pete statue they are inventing hysteria.
two cents

Hopefully, Dr. Blanchard makes the following changes when he gets here on May 1:
1) Move the A.D. position back under his authority, away from the pencil pusher.
2) Change the school name formally to Long Beach State
3) I like the 49ers but I just want the school to go with one identity. Get rid of Elbee, Sharks, Dirtbags and anything else I'm forgetting...

watching the USC-UCLA MVB game at USC, broadcast on Fox TV
Sunderland gave a nice tribute to Knipe, and the 2025 NCAA title to ........the Long Beach State 49ers!
guess he ignored the memo, too many years for him to take up Jane's idiocy
