I disagree about the current organization chart structure. I don't think it's very common that the A.D. reports to a person lower than the president or chancellor at a D1 school. Just that alone gives the perception that the university could care less about whether we stay D1 or not. I think a lot of good potential A.D. candidates passed on the opportunity to pursue the position when Fee left because of that. The 3 finalists for the A.D. position (as reported) were hardly stellar candidates, and Smitheran was the least qualified of the 3 by far. Just think about that for a while...

The President cannot unilaterally change the name of the University to Long Beach State. The official names of the campuses are in the Education Code and changes require a vote of the California legislature. The "unofficial" use of Long Beach State for Athletics works just fine for the most part.
Athletics needs a capable leader, whether it's the President or someone who reports to him. The current VP is not well-suited to running Athletics regardless of how he is otherwise perceived. If Athletics is going to survive, it's going to require a change of mentality to a more stream-lined and flexible mentality that is more entrepreneurial and willing to take risks. We have none of that at the moment, and I'm not sure the new President recognizes that either.

Hopefully, Dr. Blanchard makes the following changes when he gets here on May 1:
1) Move the A.D. position back under his authority, away from the pencil pusher.
2) Change the school name formally to Long Beach State
3) I like the 49ers but I just want the school to go with one identity. Get rid of Elbee, Sharks, Dirtbags and anything else I'm forgetting...
