The revenue sharing isn't mandatory? What's the point of the settlement then? Previous Message
The opt in or out applies only to the revenue sharing. The revenue sharing is not mandatory, even for those schools that opt in. There’s no reason not to opt in, except to make a principled point. The Ivy Leagues don’t offer athletic scholarships, but what would be the point of a CSU opting out other than acknowledging that you don’t expect to have revenue to share? Previous Message
oh, agree
you really think the AD has 'necessary' information lol? like really Smitherin has some crystal ball. I'm sure the ADs, the Big West Conf commish all intend for the best. but all these guys are also likely constantly looking for their next best job, unless they are on some 5 year bridge to retiring
nope.
he knows more than I on specifics, for sure.
but we've been seeing the Ohio State, USC, Texas, Alabama crowd dictate everything, so no practically doubt our AD really knows the right decision.
I know the Ivy League is opting out. says volumes
sorry. Previous Message
I don't think any of us know the true implications of opt-in or opt-out. That is why we have an athletic director who attends conference and NCAA meetings. He has the necessary information to make the decissionthat is best for the 49ers. Previous Message
I agree. I don't see the advantage of opting in other than more of 'hanging on to see if we be part of the big boy's group, while they sh&t all over us and take our best athletes'
if the Big West wanted to be bold, they'd opt out and issue a big F U to the NCAA, try to set a trend. granted, everybody wants to fight for table scraps, lol.
the current/future/P4/whatever model WILL implode and not even be close to now, because it's an unregulated mess
but....alas....missed the boat on trying to align with the Ivy League.
and I suspect the Big West has some schools who are 'dreamers' still wiht grandiose ideas of being in the Pac-xyz. god forbid to be part of a Mountain West which isn't anything great with the upcoming split Previous Message
What is the down side for the conference to opt out? As I understand it, we can still continue to provide athletic scholarships and even offer a meager/modest NIL opportunity. Are we afraid our top athletes are going to leave after a year because of the lack of revenue sharing? They're already leaving for NIL or better NIL, so what's the difference? Maybe the schools from the Big West, WCC and Cal Baptist who prefer to opt out should form a separate conference and let the others who want revenue sharing to fend for themselves... Previous Message
I think the the BIg West is going the route of opt in.
which not really sure that's the wise move. basically just agreeing to rules that are not going to help you anywa
I suspect if not, then some members would seriously look to leave for an opt in conference
almost at the point thinking not to opt in, let the whole think play out. the P4s have media contracts, that's it, no control or sanity for anything
would love to see the Big West try to align with the Ivy League, but Davis leaving doesn't help for that.
revenue sharing? what reveue? that's a joke, I can see profit sharing (cause no profit), but revenue sharing? it's stupid. Long Beach has to have subsidies to continue to be competitive, and similar to the UCS.
aside from 20 or so universiies, there's no competition, I guess great for some students who can make some money for a couple of years, but for 90%, lol, it's a joke. meaningless for long term careers for them. Previous Message
The Ivy League announced they are opting out of the NCAA settlement with past and current athletes. Has the Big West taken a position on it? Without knowing too much about the settlement, it would seem that the Big West should also opt out, since most of the schools are relatively underfunded in athletics. Are there any negative implications to opting out that isn't so obvious?
