So many assumptions here, so many incorrect statements...cheesus.
1) How will NIL affect academics. Now that it's clearly about pay for play, how in hades can academic endorcement occur. Imagine investing $100k in a student, and then the pressure to 'pass' them from faculty. It will be more intense. Surely will be even more 'steering' of NIL earners into easier degrees or classes. It's human nature.
2) Do NIL & Collectives have contract provisions to negate contracts if academic progress is not made?
almost never hear any more of athletes not cutting it
3) Academics across the board are getting watered down in California: some causes
a) modern technology. the learning environment between remote, and what is actual knowledge learning. as an example, classical learning of knowledge about subject matter is being replaced by development of whatI would term "navigating with information technology tools' knowledge. IOTW, learnging tool use to obtain answers as opposed to subject matter knowledge.
b) it's not as if students are not able to learn, just that they've been so conditioned to think of learning as 'getting answers', without thinking of whether the answers are correct. an impatience factor. granted HS and college students can do things fast with the IT tools at their disposals, so they can finish assignments, but what are they really learning?
4) the huge be careful what you wish for effect: Since Calif abolished use of SATs, documented grade inflation in High Schools are occuring. because it's about competing for GPA soley vs. using normalized test scores, the incentive for HS's is to 'creep up' grades. who can blame them?
Yes, SATs did have a bias, but now it's replaced by another bias, and actually inconsistent bias from school to school High performaing grads at schools that got a higher share of UC admits, now get less admits, because they don't have the prior high SATs to justify getting in.
4a) the effect? those students will go elsewhere. PRivate and out of State. It is occuring. Now is the goal of more equitable education regardless of socio-economic status obtained? I guess. People should not kid themselves though that on the whole UC and higher performing Cal States admits are not as well prepared.
4b) It forces teachers to lower standards, less learning. to think they can maintain defies logic.
4c) leading to grade inflation in Calif universities
4d) combined with Calif population stagnant, when some Cal States should be closed, California is fallig behind in preparing for knowledge and grwoth
5) what does this mean for Beach academics? Beach is still situated as a very attractive option, we were never getting the top UC type students.
5b) we need Jane to get the heck out of the way. Whatever leadership she had stagnated way back to 2019, combined with her lying about the fund-raising ($300 million, what a farce), lying about academic excellence, the academic dis-honesty surrounding the mascot/Pete issue (that was all about getting rid of the white guy statue, nothing more nothing less, and yeah ok, just admit it if that is what you and some students wanted, can at least respect the honesty and goal in that context)
ok, rant over, we have to ask for high expectations regardless!
