I can see maybe the WCC adding Denver, not sure after that.
Just can't see any other WCC schools bolting. St Mary's probably wants to be in the Pac-? for basketball, but they are nowhere near pull Gonzaga has. Plus, I think Fresno does not want another NorCal school. The Pac-? will want to get whatever the biggest media/football fish left they can get.
with the P4 sure to implode within 4-5 years as the P4 hogs dictate and the P4 rats will scurrying again, the Pac-? is likely setting itself up to have some of them begging for a home. I guess we have to excuse the P4, they simply can't help themselves, poor bastards!
I think Cal may end up as financial disaster from all this. Or maybe not!
Coming in with Seattle...
I"m not surprised. It's the wise move.
With BYU leaving the WCC, the only top 50 team is St Mary's. Plus they are adding Seattle. Gonzaga I think could deal with the bottom of the WCC so long as there were enough top teams.
Geography is better. Boise/OSU/WSU is better for travel and those are probably better than the mid-level WCC teams.
Utah State is a solid program. SDSU obviously top tier.
Fresno has struggled. Colo State/Boise have had some good teams.
Basically teams that collective will be much better for basketball. All have good arenas, vs. the crackerbox gyms of the WCC. Granted San Fran and St Mary's I thought were pretty cool gyms even if claustrophopic.
being in Bay Area and Socal wasn't really doing much for Gonazaga. With this they are still in California, and now with top athletic programs funding wise outside of UCLA/USC/Stan/Cal.
I think at the time the MWC was just too large, even if it was (WAS) a good basketball conference.
I just do not see why UNLV would balk at this point, maybe it was the Nevada connection.
The WCC was never gonna get better, so nothing to lose. worst-case is they come begging back to the WCC if this doesn't work out. If the program is still as good as now, the WCC would take them. If the program isn't, doesn't matter anyways.
I think the ship sailed on Gonzaga getting a Big12 invite, anyway. Without a football program, they really don't have a lot of options.
and maybe with Gonazaga it maybe makes teams like Memphis and UNLV re-consider.
a no-brainer for the Pac-? and Gonzaga IMO
Count me as surprised about this move. The newly reformed PAC is better than the WCC but maybe not as much as you think. Also, they turned down the old MWC just a few seasons ago. I also thought they were holding out for possible offers from the Big 12 or Big East, which now seams unlikely since they have to sign a 5 year grant of rights agreement or all of the other new schools have...maybe they get an exemption and can go to a higher level conference, with less penalties?
