the modern game is a math problem, a 3 is worth more than 2! hello!! as you get further from the bucket the 2 becomes a worse shot.
basically mid-range shots are not where it's at if you can help it. open 3, or drive and get fouled or dunk, that's the modern game, every coach (well most) understand that. Jerry Sloan had trouble adapting to it with his old school set 15 picks to get a bucket basketball.
it's a math problem.
guard the 3 vs. guarding the 20 foot shot, seems obvious, if one knows math
something Monson, a math major, just never seemed to get, and why he is out of a job
"inside-out" how many times did people hear that with Monson over and over? over and over, with almost never any sort of explaination. the color guy Dave Miller like a parrot would repeat that ad nauseum. cliche city type of coaching.
outside-in or inside-out, who cares.
open 3, if not open drive to the hoop. nobody wins with mid-range jumpers, except for San Diego State, lol, who has a bunch of muscle men defenders who drape over opponents and prevent drives to the hoop. they get it defensively. the partial irony is kind of rich for what's about to happen with a new coach at Beach.
we had 3 elite experienced defenders this year (AT, AJ, Jones) and we could NOT defend the 3 outside of the BWCT. it's just crazy stuff.
look at these stats last 3 years:
2024:
disparity of 3 pt shots was 360 points over the year, an average deficit of 12 pts per game, and with them shooting 33% and us 30 %, just amazing stat on how poor our 3 pt philosphy/execution was
2023:
disparity of 3 pt shots was 423 (FOUR HUNDRED AND TWENTY THREE!!) while we shot 30.5% and opponents shot 34.6%. an average deficit to overcome of almost 14 points per game!!
just amazing how hard a team has to work to solve that math problem, and we saw it repeatedly
2022:
disparity was less, 159 points over season, while we shot 35% and opponents shot 35 %. Having Murray and Slater, plus great switching defense
however, in conference in 2022:
in conference in 2022, Beach was 3rd in 3pt makes in conference while shooting 33% and holding opponents to 30%. they won a title!
MOnson is not coaching right now because he simply could not TEACH the modern game, it's that simple.
"inside-out" cliche simply resulted in getting beat from the outside in. You have to guard the 3, and have to take good 3s, and hit 3s. 3 pt shot selection last two years was just abysmal, Tone & Marcus last year, Marcus/Messiah/Silva this year. Granted when Marcus went off sure we could win, but on average? not so much. All 3 of those guys were 35%+ before coming to Long Beach. not bagging on Marcus, but his shot selection was often horrific, never really got taught.
in the BWCT this year, the Beach won the 3pt battle, yet over the rest of the season simply got crushed like a cockroaches. you can't have a strategy to just hope they miss shots from 3
in 2022, Hampton went down injured, we simply had to spread the floor by necessity, and behold!! the team won a title with spacing and winning the 3 battle!!! but that didn't seem to get thru to MOnson
in conference in 2002, Beach was 3rd in 3pt makes in conference while shooting 33% and holding opponents to 30%
the new coach pretty sure will understand the modern game.
