To win teh Big West, to have a solid shot at going to the NCAAs, to win OVER 20 games (not squeek by winning just 20), to be a TOP 100 team
A win over a solid Davis is good, relative to two weeks ago it's great.
Still it was just a win in teh context of this season's expectations
WHile Davis has been better during conference than non-conference. that is at best a team rated about 160, in other words the top of the bottom half of D1 basketball
In terms of expectations, shouldn't be lowered, the team is having to claw it's way back to the real expectations above. now can they back it up, can they elevate and keep getting better? Northridge has gotten it back together. Stringing wins together is a must. Northridge will be putting bodies on the Traores that Davis did not do. the Perimeter guys are going to ahve to block out and make better muscle plays, and certainly not make the 6-7 bonehead telegraphed/weak passes they made vs. Davis
the good:
Defense on Ty Johnson and Melling. Johnson scored 19 points, but he was harassed pretty well all game, like how we bodied him a lot, he's not a typical 3 pt threat, he did hit an open look and fortunately missed a great look to tie it. We didn't give Melling hardly any space, and he was controlled, Pepper had more space for shots but then Pepper's better at making his own space
Their big, Adebayo, had ZERO points and 2 rebounds.
so overall the zone and man was effective. Still that zone of ours scares me, too many open looks, especially 1st half guys seemingly way off of Pepper, it's still a pick your poison zone the way we play it as far as I'm concerned. Davis shot 37%, still too high
the bad.
most of the bad centered on turnovers, the game shouldn't have been close if guys can stop with some really senseless turnovers
teh book is out on Stroud, make him put the ball on the floor and then converge and he'll turn it over. He's got to hold the ball high and give it up, give and go. he's too tall and too unaware of backside help to be taking dribbles. Face the basket and find a guy to pass too.
Tsohonis. Man, he's solid at the FT line, still that dunce half-dunk play 1st half he missed was a 5 point switch, would have been 12-2 instead it became 10-5 in 5 seconds time. Then the silly kick-out on his shot that could have been worse if th bucket was waived off or he got kicked out.that's how you lose leads and games. Granted Ty Johnson himself was physically bodying himself on guys to bait us. 1st half half dunk, dang just put the damn ball in the hoop as soon as you can. then that 1st TO 2nd half. he'd been passing great, and made a nice pass, but really needs to have driven home sometimes to make the simple play.
Messiah. Great form, when he sets on his shot, he's great, and broke out of a big slump. if he can only be more consistant. Plus like Tsohonis, just that first TO of 2nd half gets himself into traffic. Overall, hopefully it starts a trend.
the really good:
Lassina. didn't get frustrated with only a few shots, and passed out of double teams like never before. plus his rebounds, played a great role player game. his passing was a major reason for open looks 1st half and teh big lead.
AT's persistence. Boards and some key buckets, even though some of those he's threading borderline out of control. plus 8 of 11 FTs!!!! wow, with his form that should be standard and not the exception, with how much he gets fouled.
