They would have already done that if they could. The NCAA serves a legal and structural purpose for them. Lets them remain a student-athlete organization.
the new organization would basically be professional sports, it's semi pro football now for the top 20 or so anyway. But they don't want to be labeled as professional sports, since they want it both ways.
I think the question is if the non P5 actually could take over the NCAA, since they have the vast majority of schools and kick out the professional sports franchises masquerading as Universities. won't happen,. The NCAA brass would probably like to kick out 250 schools and be that new organization, but they can't, those 250 schools are the real student-athletes. Hence,it would be good to see the non P5 kick out the P5 out of the NCAA, won't happen.
it's funny to hear reports about schools that have shown they can't regulate theselves and won't permit the NCAA to regulate themselves try to form an organization to regulate themselves. They already have a compliant NCAA now to do what they want, why would they change that?
the new organization would end up with a commissioner, more overhead, suck up dollars they pretty much control now.
but who knows. not Long Beach's or the Big West's problem. If Hawaii wants to go chase the organization/'dream' and get back in the Mountain West who will be trying to hang on to relevance and get in to a new org, then so be it.
I do think the Big West needs to get out of ESPN umbrella, would be interesting to know how much the Big West actually gets out of it, other than being on a ESPN platform. The Big West needs to find a way to maximize streaming revenue if it can.
Proposes to create a new subdivision (aka super division) for the wealthiest schools who'll be allowed to deal directly with athletes on NIL and who can make their own rules governing athletics. If this catches on, easy to envision the Big West ending up in a "new Div 2" although it won't be named so. I didn't think this day would come for years, but it would appear I'm wrong.
