The transfer portal of course is a major and important tool to address immediate concerns and gives access to higher level players that may have not been available as high school recruits.
IMO, a program like LBSU that is pushing to move up the ranking ladder needs to sign the best available portal player at almost any position. If you can sign a player that is bigger, more physical and has the potential to be "significantly" more productive you have to bring the player aboard. The only position I may not take that stand on is the setter position at LBSU. I think all other positions could use the competition and depth provided by a talented addition.
a 'line-up' based on returnees alone
Setter: Meyer
Opp: Glenn
OH1: Agi
OH2: Jordan/O'Reilly/Karach
MBs: Lomigora, Bacon
Libero: Chacon/Velucci
DS: Giambi/Velucci/Chacon
that should be a line-up that alone should be as good or better than this year's team, and a lot of flexibility and competition for all the spots. having to replace Kennedy's quickness/offense is the main thing that sticks out.
that OH2 spot list is composed of players who all had injuries this year
still will need a solid back-up setter, with Chavira gone
Lomigora is 6'2", Bacon 6'4"
height-wise we are ok on MB. rather have vertical/quickness than height.
but we could use some improvement in blocking and consistency in receiving, and need that 2nd OH that can terminate, whether that person is 5'8" or 6'8".
Haven't seen any Niners hit the portal (yet) but it wouldn't surprise me if it happens. I hope Tyler picks up some size. I know size isn't everything but we're short even compared to the upper echelon Big West teams. After Bacon, we have no one over 6'2. None of the high school commitments for 24-25 are that height. And, for god's sakes, have them hit the weight room this off-season. Except for Agi, we're very skinny compared to UCSB and Cal Poly.
