I think Friday morning, 1-1 would have been taken in a heartbeat, just a bit surprising how it came about
pretty much exposed what was known about what issues the team would have today.
1) Kennedy is the most complete player, god help us what that would have looked like without her today
2) Bacon was solid on blocking, we need better swings from her
3) not sure which pins should be in there. nothing is clear. 1 kill from the Opp position today, if that doesn't change it'll be a long season, won't even rule out moving Kennedy back to Opp if absolutely necessary, but she's so quick and versatile in the middle
4) Meyer had a poor match, particularly way too many sets off, not a good connection with Bacon. especially when we should have got a massive 7 or 8 pt lead in that 1st set, a couple bad sets, along with a couple overpasses, kept LMU in it that first set until they got their rhythm. absolutely had to win that first set, but then probably wouldn't have mattered even if so
5) watching, it seems we need some set plays for Meyer to get a couple more swings each set, need to have some other attack options for her to swing. heck today, it might've been better to swing half the time vs. setting to the pins
6) it seemed like TExas didn't serve hard other than SKinner, and yep, our backrow wasn't nearly as clean handling LMUs harder serves, wasn't horrible, but wasn't great
7) LMU is good, I thought they looked solid, their block gave Texas issues and really gave us issues, lots of tipped balls their back-row handled.
8) maybe the best news is these two games might be the two best blocking teams we'll face all year, but the passing and setting needs work. Lesiak had a horrid Pepperdine match, but was the best overall OH this weekend. Glenn is struggling for any offense. Hayes can be plugged in, but not for an entire match.
Heck, today I almost wanted CHavira to come in and set and Meyer move to the Opp.
from ecstasy to reality, still 1-1 was a very good start all things considered. LMU could def win the WCC.
Indiana will be the next big test.
