a year extension might be warranted, would just have to depend on performance - have to take some risk if there is a proven coach (which Monson never was, his pay was based on having his teams get the crap beat out of them)
the Monson decisions are not something to point to as a case study.
of course Beach isn't alone, Cal Poly extended their coach simply for one good week, lol
some people get all excited about a 6 or 7 game streak, and think a coach is great after that.
if a coach gets 2 or 3 titles and 2 or 3 NCAA appearances in a 3-4 year span, with different personnel - that says a lot
Monson simply got paid to lose with what he & Cegles arraigned, that was a tough lesson, never pay a coach to lose, ....because they will if it makes them money

A contract term of 7-10 years creates a needless expense. Imagine if Monson had a 10 year contract.
5 years is typical for coaches contracts because it covers the typical span of a player's attendance at a school (with the exception of the recent grant of an additional Covid year). This helps with recruiting because the coach can tell the players that he'll be there (theoretically) for the entirety of their college playing time.
A better solution is a built-in contract clause that extends the contract after a season is completed for an additional year (with approval of the AD) so that a coach essentially has a 4-5 year contact continuously. this is the equation that confronts the successful coaches (nothing about this logic applies to Monson, whose tenure & AD decisions defy logic)
WBB: so a salary of $250k (maybe some is camps, bonus built in)
with 4-5 successful years, at year 5 Beach can offer:
longer term extensions (7 or even 10 year, albeit 10 year would have to have a LOT of success to justify), so it's reasonable to think could offer up to $350k, but 7 years after 4-5 solid years, maybe more $$ if attendance has grown
MBB: say it's a $400 k
same thing, after 4-t years, can offer maybe $500k-$600k depending on the state of program, and and extend to 7 years,
still how do you compete with:
a $500k-$600k (or more) offer for 4-5 years at another WBB school
or a $750k-$1.5M offer for 4-5 years at another MBB school
just have to offer 'job security' and hold they like being a big fish in a small pond, and also much more potential stability in their lives
been pretty stable with coaches outside of basketball
and it's not like coaching basketball at Beach is chump change
