well, yes he will go, 100% after next year
now will he and the admin have a serious talk about Beach future? It would seem logical for the program's interest but I don't know, I would think, but I've been wrong, that Monson would show some semblance of deference to Long Beach which has made him a wealthy man and been overly tolerant on his mediocrity and his not lifting a finger to promote the program the last decade. Maybe he doesn't look at it that way though. Maybe he's just dismissive to criticism and actually thinks the school might extend him again, but there's no way in hell they would. It's sad, for sure that he can't seem to think Long Beach first, Monson second after all the school has done. Maybe he thinks the school 'owed him' for him not considering going after that phantom SMU job that he surely would have mucked that up had he actually been chosen. who knows
I've given up thinking he might do the decent thing and just walk away now - and jsut assist Scholl for next year Previous Message
That's a lot of thought and writing and I appreciate it. However, all of that could have been countered with a better preparation, plain and simple. Nothing convinces me otherwise. This guy just has to go! Previous Message
remember the movie Network News "I'm mad as hell and I'm not gonna take it anymore" line
ok, some maywould apply that to the MBB program
in terms of last night, it was really about Cal Poly.
I know people want to use terms like 'unmotivated' to describe Beach's performance. that's just not true.
Beach played hard until the dam broke, and there were two dam's broken. at least we didn't have the feeling of the Big Al Gauchos in 2014 when the very first game at noon started with the unexpected shell-acking of UCSB by Poly, and SB fans had to turn right back to SB.
Poly played exceptionally well, the first half was very good basketball. Poly MAULED our bigs, they didn't care how many fouls, and they piled them up. plus, LT just looked like he had no elevation from the get go, he was challenged, and they put him at the line, I'm still not sure if he actually made more than one bucket/points that weren't FTs. he was gassed, it was like almost the 2011 BWCT final vs. SB as well where guys couldn't hit a 1 foot shot all game, in this game there was a ton of pressure on every shop. Regardless, our bigs have to learn to pass better out of double teams and pressure for ball movement
If people want to get on Monson (and there's a lot of reason to do so, he never should have been re-upped, and that's all old news), last night wasn't a good example.
Poly threw two guys at AT, boards AT would get in other games, he was sealed out all not long. those guys were on a mission, and understandably, we had embarrassed them twice (the only team to do so btw), and they should have won their 2 or 3 of their last 3 games. It's kind of hard to assess how they'll play vs. SB, but they do have bodies and Stevenson is a totally different player than he was a month ago.
yeah it looks bad when it's a 1-19 team. They must have played 10 guys and each one was physical.
If there's an area to critique Monson yesterday, maybe that 4-5 minute stretch where we just keep trying to pound inside when they were packed in, and the lead kept slipping. Monson should have expected guys would have some leg issues, I would have rotated Stroud especially and Rotegaard in more, and went to motion outside. Even then not sure anything would have helped.
Tone's first 3 was a horrific look, which he missed, Tone frankly was really bad, not only that he seemed to be jawing a lot, which when you are getting your head handed to you isn't the best look. Just awful game, he had one pull-up jumper when everything was meaningless, he doesn't know how to pause on a drive, doesn't know how to feed outside off of a drive- it's a refrain from the entire season he needs weight training needs to watch film and find a way in the summer to work on his game that isn't in some uncontrolled rec league environment that might reinforce bad habits.
I get the score was tough to swallow. I remeber Caliperi and listening to him after a loss to them on their post game after I think a '10 or '11 loss and he remarked that he KNEW by looking at our schedule of flying out to play NC or someone flying back home, then flying back in another day to Lexington that our legs would be shot with about 12-15 minutes left to play, and he was right.
I know these are young kids, but a 2OT game, take the 5 hour+ bus back, take another 5 hour bus on Monday....plus apparently we practiced (which I have no idea why), plus the knowledge of having to then win 4 in 5.....I know it all comes off as excuse, the fact is this entire scenario began unfolding when Davis got a full weeks rest by not playing and putting Beach in a bind, and even then can't make an excuse when you blow a 10 pt lead in 90 seconds. Polynice was in a boot, Tsohonis combination of foot/ankle and demeaner. This team had they rested for Thursday could have been a different story.
on the plus side, the dance team and band were flipping outstanding lol, and now no one gets to see them at their best aside from about 300 people
let's hope these guys come back, and I'm pretty much in the camp of letting Scholl take over at least designate him and the two assistants, and after last night, yeah we need a pt guard as Tone may get there but that's a big crapshoot based on where he is.
I really wish Monson would step aside or at least defer to Scholl in the coming week. Hope the guys stay. there's really good talent. If 2 or 3 leave, that would be a tough pill to swallow.
