Irvine: then have a vacuum sucking animal that resides in Central America and eats insects off of hard-scrabble dirt or pavement, huh?
Cal Poly & Davis. Horses and Aggies. someone does it correct
Bakersfield. A fast bird on land that is Central America and New Mexico, huh?
Northridge. A Spanish murderer of animals, that cruelly sticks multiple knives into a largely defenseless animal. huh?
Fullerton. An elephant from India. Huh?
Hawaii. Warriors. appropriate, but...they killed people
Riverside.
"Scotty Highlander" is the mascot for UC Riverside. The original mascot was an aggressive little bear wearing a kilt for the school's logo. In 1998, a referendum to move to NCAA Division I was passed and the students approached the administration requesting a new mascot and the old mascot was replaced. In 2011, the mascot was updated again with students voting online and a new "Scotty Highlander" mascot, featuring a roaring bear wearing a plaid Tam o' Shanter was chosen.[2]
in other words, there are no bears in Riverside, have not been, no Highlanders, no legacy Scots. A mascot DEVOID of any connection to Riverside itself. huh?
San Diego. Half-man, half fish. Ok, could have done worse. Given the local, not bad. But some connection.
Long Beach.
49ers Prospector Pete. A combination of
1) Year school founded
2) Initial President of the University
3) Association with the year 1949 and California Prospectors from the gold rush
4) Depiction of an adventurer
in other words, the most appropriate mascot that can actually be BOTH affiliated and identifiable to the university and the state
but deemed inappropriate by a few Professors, and segment of students,
and those students initiating it really didn't know squat about the comprehensive history of Long Beach or California or prospectors, they simply wanted to 'stick it to the white man', let's not kid ourselves what the change was really about.
Conclusion:
We have a bizarro authoritarian least common denominator Pesident unable to generate and foster intelligent academic discourse.
