definitely a nice improvement over a year ago, and without the uber athletic Kash
doubled attendance,
have a setter that the team next year can be built around, assuming 1-2 other recruits/xfers
doing it without a stand-out OH arm
MBs were expected to be more of a force, especially after the blocking numbers twe put up in non-conf, would be good to get Tyler's take on why the blocking #s went down significantly in conference
on the good side, were a couple points/matches away from an at-large (reverse the loss to Full, and if had finished off Top 10 RPI Oregon and the resume would a bubble in-ish resume
on the bad side, were also 3-4 points from losing a few of those 5 setters to some bad teams, and a 16-12 record would have been....mewh
on the good side, the team showed the grit to grind out a lot of matches when they didn't play their best
it did seem like other than the Oregon and Davis matches, the team never really did play their best
for Morgan Chacon, she took a huge load, and delivered kills and consistency. however, her Receiving stats suffered this year compared to her FSU resume, and have to wonder if that big of load takes a toll on the overall game
Bacon came in to the season with promise, just this year still hasn't become as quick as might have thought. The MB situation next year is actually the biggest question - quickness, timing, blocking. to go from top 75 to top 40 needs some demonstrated athletic improvements.
SHeffie showed some athleticsm and great attitude, can see in time becoming an all Big West type player, not sure how dynamic though for next year.
serving. serving was ok, some games with too many errors, key games vs. Hawaii/SB didn't win the serve receive battle when we needed
De La Cruz, the biggest pleasant surprise. now what happens?. Is Hoff comng back, Giambi, Savanah appears to end injured. A Libero coming in as a frosh. Glenn could even play libero, but sure she wants the shot as the OH2/Opp.
Opp. Kennedy's natural position, teh natural position for Glenn as well being lefty, so what happens.
the OH1. Still think it's too much of a workhorse required for Morgan. Glenn and Jordan will improve, question is to what level. We need some thunder out of an OH.
backrow, definitely more consistent, with De La Cruz gone, can they take another step up in receiving, now have to be clutch in matches vs. top tier Big West teams.
Transfer portal will be intriguing. Hopefully Tyler again keeps a lot of key players, last year he had to do a bit of a shotgun approach. this year he has to to get a key MB or OH arm.
next year won't be a surprise for the start of the Big West. If they conference continues the pattern, will start off first five games with Poly, SB, & Hawaii in those first five games - have to come mentally prepared at end of September to start off as a bully to those other teams.
IMO, another trip to NEbraska next year will be a waste unless the talent is recruited to WIN that match, or we get another good challenge/opponent.
Tyler has to show he can develop/train from beginning to end. In some ways the team peaked in the first 24 hours of the season until the last 3-4 points against Oregon. Everything after that first weekend was a few steps forward and a few steps back. Glenn seemed to develop, when she moved to Opp. Meyer did become more confident. Aside from that, Kennedy is consistent to lead the team, but needs help on the outside.
Solid win yesterday, for WVB over Davis. Callie, who has struggled a lot, this year, had a solid match last night. The entire team hit .356. Most impressive was the serving. 6 aces to 8 errors. Service errors have been a big problem this year. Natalie Glenn had 4 of those errors, but also had 3 aces. Nice to see Meyer cut down the errors, while still serving tough. Nicole Hoff came in and served up the last five points of the match.
Still disappointed in the lackluster UCI performance last week, but if they can win against Riverside tonight, coupled with last night's win, they can end the season on a high note and plan for next season.
