The team is tired and a bit beat up. It's pretty clear. Savannah had tape on her thigh a couple of matches ago. Same with Morgan and Jaylen Jordan (Jaylen had tape the match after she had a breakout match). Couple that with the number of swings Morgan has been getting and a string of 5 set matches, and it's understandable.
Tyler understood that this year was going to be a pretty good team, and that future teams were uncertain (dependent on recruiting and development). I'm not sure the announced recruits will mark a huge improvement next year, so there may be a need to try to shore up the immediate future through the transfer portal.
would disagree they are worn out, they just looked plain bad. the hitting serving errors from on particular player was just horrific execution - nothing to do with being worn out
I would say one key stat is Morgan Chacon did not receive as well this year as at FSU, and she has taken the role of #1 OH, which I think may have some effect on her receiving - albeit other than the Hawaii and SB matches last two weeks we've been solid receiving
maybe Savanah Chacon was injured, which could/would contribute to the back-row receiving issues and there was some confusion with McKnight exploited over and over all night - that was the most all year that one opposing player exploited our back-row - they all needed to move up a step and then handle higher serves if she would have tried that - never happened - more than anything McKnight simply served us off the court
it was so dissapointing that Tyler didn't rotate in Sheffie at least for a set or from some rotations as Bacon/Callie went back to some of their 'push' attacks, and granted the SB block is the best vs. what Northridge puts up - still don't understand why Jordan and Sheffie didn't get out there,
in any case we have a new MB coming in, it's hard to gauge for HS players how much that'll help in replacing Callie. Same with the new Opp coming in from Springfield. The OH from Utah I'm sure is a walk-on. Not worried about the back-court for next year, albeit Dylan has been solid, I do think out of Glenn or Chacon, one of those two, maybe Giambi (and curious why Giambi has never seen a match, mainly because she was our best receiver last year) at libero. Also assuming Hoff will graduate, and open a schollie. Also assuming WIlliams will move on.
Assuming the rest come back for last year of elgibility (probably not a safe assumption), it still leaves in recruiting a potential pin hitter or MB. I think Sheffie in a couple years could be the level of Okpala type of player
in any case, four matches left, and they will beat Riverside, the other 3 are non sure things, so hpe they put it back together for these last 4 matches to keep building momentum.
at least it's been great to have a team that competes hard, and finds all sorts of ways to manufacture points vs. the prior five years of disarray on the floor. as said, there's a lot of enthusiasm and Tyler & players learned a hard lesson that Big West teams don't roll over (well unless they see Hawaii uniforms). Robyn's hard-nosed style has definitely served her well as each year they progressively get better as the season goes along.
Tyler is a better choice than I ever expected our hapless AD Fee to ever make, but heís still obviously inexperienced as a head coach. A change in coach can give a team a spark and enthusiasm, and thatís what happened early on, but this team is out of contention and getting worn down as the season goes on (while other teams get stronger), and itís harder to respond to mere enthusiasm. Tyler needs to rely on coaching now, not simply cheerleading. He doesnít seem to have given a lot of thought thought to alternate lineups because his choices have been puzzling and/or flat out bad. He said last week they were going to work hard on getting passing back to form, and it was the worse passing all season.
I think part of the problem is that he doesnít have anyone on staff who actually has experience training vs playing.
just horrific receiving and really to one SB server. serve- receive is just plain bad.
not a good performance, we look like Riverside
