Re: WVB - now it's a new era
The non conference went pretty much as I expected but I was surprised with the near upset of Oregon. The team beat the ones they should have and lost to the teams they probably should lose to. Outside of the loss to Fullerton the two losses to Cal Poly on the road and Hawaii at home was also not unexpected. Going into conference I thought LBSU could beat Hawaii at home but that just did not materialize. The team now needs to win a match on the home court of UCSB or Hawaii to make it up. I still believe the team can salvage the season after the rough start but the conference title probably is out of reach with the three early losses.
This team could really have used a terminating pin hitter. One that could put a driven ball down out of system. Without that type of player the opposition gets too many second and third chance opportunities to win the point.
With that said, I am enjoying the new coaching staff and all the new players. They are trying to fit into a new system and sometimes that just takes time. All the players are fine young women and represent the school and the community in a high fashion. In the end, this team may still surprise us after the slow start and win a conference championship.
Went into year one not expecting an immediate turnaround. Was pleasantly surprised by the early success but now it's back to reality. This is a work in progress and that work has barely begun.
It really does not matter at this point if we finish 4th in the Big West. What matters as you said is just to keep getting better. Need to keep bringing in good players and I would like to see the recruiting focus be more on high school players. The portal is something of a gamble. We hit the jackpot with some while others did not work out. It's gonna take time but we will get there.
well, the initial Hildebrand BIg West era is over.
pretty much a gut check for the staff and players now.
Cal Poly hit hard, Bakersfield made unacceptable runs, and this week basically just faltered down the stretch of every single set except the two where they totally dominated.
now how they close out sets when it gets to 19-20 points and get an attitude and poise. this staff will have to find a way to get the team to execute under pressure
the two service errors and overpass at the end of set 2 pretty much told the story. some good things, just at this point getting the best players in a position to make plays and make them.
Hawaii adjusted with a front row blocking setter in that 4th set, and Tyler & co. have to figure out how to adjust.
kept Hawaii's middle off the net and limiting her kills, but didn't hit enough key in serves and broke down on some easy digs and sets
goal I guess at this point is to just get better. we've seen this before starting every year in a deep ugly hole - team will really to develop a killer attitude and display some arrogance down the stretch in sets
