at the same time, that's a bit disingenuous, and he knows it.
if opponents know you are going to the BIC/backrow almost every time you set the middle, they'll block for that, duh
but seriously, he knows a transition middle set also helps set up a back-row attack, confusing the block is part of the battle, so why would any coach be dismissive of the value of a middle attack?
when you watch Hawaii and virtually every other team going for the NC, they run that.
I get in part having our middles concentrating on the block, and we've been an exceptional blocking team, but these losses where we go 2-3 sets with maybe one set to the middle is predictable, especially when other teams pass well, that it hurts the offense

Coach was asked why Aden does not set the middle often and the coach seemed a little upset by the question and said setting the pipe is setting the middle so Aden does set the “middle of the court”.
I agree with you that the middles need to be set more and that will take a little of the pressure off the pins. I find it hard to believe that a team that typically passes as well as LBSU that the middles are not getting a bunch of sets.

On Friday,
LB has 16 sets to the middle, out of 69 total (23%)
On Saturday, LB had 13 sets to teh middles, out of 123 or 7%.
just like PSU, LB was going massive stretches with simply no middle sets, and even worse, we virtually NEVER set a middle in transition, I mean we go matches with maybe 1-2 middle sets in transition,& opposing coaches know this
of course, some of that was SD simply playing/passing so much better
but not all, predictable offenses get SLAUGHTERED in the NCAAs
UCLA, Hawaii, Penn State, & Santa Barbara are just going to beat us if we play them again, that simple, the strategy can't be to just simply count on perfect serve-receive nights, because our serving was actually good on Saturday - right now we are counting on simply out-serving them as a strategy -
both the PSU and UCSD were so similar, because you could see the loss coming as soon the 3rd sets, like a freight train, Marochi hit 0.800!!! and we didn't get him the ball in transition, just inexcusable for a national championship caliber team.
had two months to get this fixed, or call time-outs in these matches, or make make a change to get the messagein, and get some balls to the middle, depressing loss

not so much the loss, just not closing things out after up 5th set. LB now 0-4 in 5 set matches, that's not a good thing, Knipe has not played well in the 5th set of the PSU and this match. plus they pretty much have to win the BWCT now if they want to be assured of getting in to the NCAAs, they were in really good shape, not so much now. SD handled LB's serve about as good as any team has.
Moody & HOldaway not playing, not good, they needed one of them tonight
