and Slater is a solid defender on the best perimeter defensive team in the league, so they could take that into a count.
One of the reasons Ware won over OJ was Ware was just a hands down better defender
the award is Player of the Year, so there's enough subjectivity in it, and upper class and being on the first place team counts for quite a lot Previous Message
Yup, can't remember a year when the awards will be this up in the air. Traore should be, without question, the Freshman of the year, the only other guy worth bringing up might be Ajay Mitchell. I'd love for Traore to get player of the year, but they lean hard towards upperclassmen unless the guys stats make him undeniable, like Diane a couple of year ago. Even though SB got off to a horrific start, Sow was the guy driving their turnaround, so I'm picking him as a guy who the Coaches might gravitate towards. Maybe not a big deal, but I think the coaches might (as a tie breaker) also go with the guy who sends a message to returning players it's okay to play in the conference for 4 years. I'm sure Monson would love to swing whatever sentiment is out there towards Slater as a senior.

nobody from Davis will win POY, conf stats only
that leaves:
SOW: USCB 16.5 ppg, 8.7 rbg (he'll be 1st team)
Anoseki: Full 15.5 ppg, 8.2 rbg (he'll be 1st team)
Murray: LB 15.5 ppg, 2.8 apg,
Slater: LB 14.9 ppg, 2.2 apg
Traore: LB 10.7 ppg, 10 rpg, Traore, 1.9 bpg
Welp from UCI & Coleman from Hawaii are 1st team candidates, I may be missing a couple players
I would not be surprised to 3 LB 1st team players, and not surprised to see only 1
to me Traore is the POY, you could make the argument it's 3 co-POY for LB, LB couldn't be as good without any one of those guys, for that matter Jones and the others. it's just LB does not have a big or 5, he's a wing, he's the most unstopable player in the league, and he leads the league in conference in rebounds and blocks and has Dennis Rodman all court defense, of all the players he's the biggest wow factor.
Welp was probably the POY favorite before the season/league
there'll be a lot of recognition, which is great, but not the real prize. Being the #1 seed has a decided 1st round advantage (even with a sucky 12 noon start time), and teh semis/final will be tough, not a large difference from 1 to 6 this year, hopefully the shooting starts of the past two games are exceptions - would like to see us try to start off with a little more movement, and then have the 3s come on later (21% 1st half, 54% 2nd half on 3s last night).
he's definitely DPOY this year, hands down.
