I'll do water changes periodically. My PPM is around 410 out of the tap, and my tank runs 500-600 PPM, and my fish seem to do OK. I was using the 2 ion exchange resins, and trying to make it work....I never perfected it, but they are really the best way to soften water, since they exchange the mineral ions for H+ and OH- ions, which are the ions of pure water. They need to be regenerated periodically, one in muriatic acid, and the other in a sodium hydroxide solution.
