Hello,
Bailey Hall is the Town Hall in Somers, NY 10589
Built in 1824 it served many functions including a dance hall in the east wing of the hotel. There is a mine north of the Hotel called the Somers prospect pit just before the Crane house on route 100. It a large pit with a mound of tailings at the base of the slope. Follow a dirt road on your left to the Heritage Hills water treatment plant. The mine is behind the small structure and is part of the Brewster magnetite district. In front of the grey stone "Crane" house is a small stone marker used by stagecoaches, it reads '16 miles to Peekskill'. Across the street is a swamp, the site of a Indian village, further north route 100 is Butler Hill the site of an ore processing plant ( now a private residence) and the clove mine. Continue north through the traffic light and bear left on Drewville road, after passing a small restaurant, look to your right for a dirt road - Magnetic Mine Rd. follow the road for about a mile look to your right for a large mound/ hill of dirt. Hike up past the dirt and rocks and walk to your right, you should find a large mining complex which extends to tthe top of the mountain. I grew up in the north end of Somers in the 70's and used to look for abandoned
places in the local area.
Mike
