Hi,
I am looking for some thoughts from responsible pit bull owners. My boyfriend has a 4yr old blue nose apbt named Rex who bit me last week. I have been around for about about 4 months now and have gotten to be great buds with Rex. I woke up to him chewing a hole in the comforter so I got up to put him in his crate (where he goes for punishment). He went under the table and when I reached under to grab his collar, he nipped my finger and I am now missing my entire finger nail.
The next morning I was not frightened around him. Chad and I just felt so confused and sad. Chad left for work and I let Rex out and spent some time with him. Then I was laying in bed reading and when I moved to get up, he got on top of me and was barking in my face. It was not a "let's play" bark, or an "I see a squirrel outside" bark. It was a bark I had never heard from him before and now I have been frightened of him. I feel like if he was going to attack me he would have but I still have not been able to be around him yet. It has been a week.
Chad says he has never shown human aggression before and thinks that he has not been giving him enough exercise lately, as he is a business owner and been busier than the first couple of years he had Rex. Please give me any thoughts or suggestions. Chad has been giving him more exercise. I have been doing a lot of research of my own and read that crates should not be used for punishment. I brought this up to Chad and he said he knew that but it was the only thing that would work when Rex was a puppy.
I feel like maybe he was associating not getting as much exercise since I have been around but I want to know for sure what could be going on.
