Mirai laughed when he was pounced by his sister, smacking her playfully across the mug and pummeling her belly as he had when they were but young pups.
"I emphasize my last statement, BRAT!" he cried, growling and latching onto one of her delicate velvet auds. With a warning tug, he rumbled, "Say mercy!"
Spritey moved closer to her grandson, extending a wing to pull him close. She buried her face into the soft ruff of the brute, wiping away tears she'd wished she could hide. He needed strength now, but all she could offer was an utter crumbling of the heart.
"Your father fell...in the battle..." she finished for Hali, her voice muffled slightly. "Thanh, love...I'm so sorry..."
Everything was falling down around her, the dam realized. She gained back one precious piece of her heart only to permanently lose another. The femma slid slowly to the ground, tears wracking her slender frame as Manny's face came to life in her memory. He'd always been so kind-hearted and intelligent, reminding her so much of Halifax in the days that her mate was apart from her. He'd been so perfect, and she'd never properly applauded his accomplishments. She was a terrible mother!
Mirai blinked at his sister's statement, releasing her ear immediately as well. Sniffing the air, he rolled onto his belly and stared blankly at the pup. Joukai found this frightened him even more, and the little brute backed up away from the two intense sets of eyes...one blurry without sight, the other so wide and intent he knew she could see right through to his very soul.
"Ah...eh...erm...heh?" stuttered the Thornling, auds flat and tail curled to become a seat for his rump.
