"Manny?" Spritey echoed, her face suddenly lighting up anew. "Manny! And Aki! Where are they, Love?"
The wolfess glanced around, as though expecting to see her two eldest children come loping up laughing and teasing. And then his next words cut through her excitement. Her heart sank down to the depths of the earth, ivory legs beginning to quake so terribly that she had to seat herself to keep from collapse.
"Manny..." she whispered hoarsely, bursting into tears, pulling her shoulders close and hanging her head as streams of misery dripped down her pale muzzle. His statements barely registered in the femme's mind as she succumbed to shock and despair. Her Manasseh...the pride and joy of their first litter. The strongest one, the most determined...with a son so much like himself.
Finally, she broke the silence.
"Don't tell Thanh yet, Hali," Spritey pleaded. "He's been through so much these past months...so much heartbreak. Save it for a more appropriate time. Please..."
The fae buried herself into his pelt, brushing off her tears and calming herself with the sensations of his coat against hers, his scent mingling in the air like a comforting perfume.
"You're alive, Hali..." she murmured distantly. "Manny...he lived his life proudly. He knew we loved him, that he was always in our hearts. He still is..."
Joukai scuttled away, hiding behind the wings of his Guardian, eyes wide and voice muted as he huddled against Hali's back.
