When fishing for Steelhead use short leads (8'-25') and when fishing for walleye use leads between 25-100' off the downrigger ball. You can use a planer board clip off the downrigger or a rubber band or a down rigger release. Another technique that you can use is a slider. A slider is basicall a 6' leader with swivels on both ends. Attach a lure to one end of the leader and connect the leader to the line you attached to the downrigger ball. The theory is the leader will go about half-way down the line attached to the downrigger ball thus allowing you to fish two spoons on one fishing rod. Once you've mastered the slider you can also use stacker clips which all allow you to fish multiple rods off one downrigger.
