If your son is 9 years old with a 43 degree curve the chances are that by the time he hits puberty it's only going to get worse. However, it could help him to not worsen as much. But he shouldn't suffer anymore. The thing is that if he stops using the brace and his curve continues to progress a lot then by the time he finishes growing and can have surgery the curve could be going on something ridiculous like 70. In this case he won't have as good of a correction and could possibly need both anterior and posterior fusions. In reality he has around 7 or so years till he matures completely. If the curve gets to big then he could end up with a rib hump that can't be corrected. You should ask your doctor about this. Just try to think of the future. Plus, if you haven't been to been several doctors you should get different opinons before you decide anything.
