I haven't heard that before. Your back, with the rods, is stronger than it's ever been so I can't imagine why that would be the case. I've seen the surgery, the rods are not attached to the muscles...but to the vertebrae. So if the rods were doing all the work, then they would be taking the place of the muscle, which is not the case. Your muscles are still working just the same. The rods aren't even of any use once your fusion is complete. Imagine this, broken back patients can have rods put in their back for fusion to take place and then the rods can be removed. Obviously ours aren't removed since that's counterproductice, but the rods aren't what's holding us up. It's our muscle, which has built back up, and our newly fused spinal column. Feel around on your back...it's not hollow. Muscle is there...and almost 7 years later, I've got strong muscles and I don't do any exercises to speak of. Does this make sense at all? I'm not a doctor...just a 22 year old girl but I think it makes sense.
