You can play basketball once you've fully fused after 1 year or so. Before full fusion,playing any kind of contact sport is a really bad idea. Lets hope the doctor said that after the girl's vertebrae had fused. Once fusion occurs, your back is stronger than before because of the fused bone and rods. So it wouldn't be hard on the rods at all.
