Irina:
I just recently had my second surgery Feb 2004. I have two curves, and they were originally 80 degrees on top and 46 degrees on the bottom. I had my first surgery when I was 11 years old and that was only for the top curve. They placed a harrington rod in my spine and degreased the curve to 42 degrees. For my lower spine, they braced me for four years. This stabilized the curve, but about five years ago, it started getting worse. I've shrunk about 1.5 inches since high school. I am now 28 and just had a second surgery on my lumbar spine. It was both an anterior and posterior surgery. The curve is now about 5 degrees. They fused all but two of the bottom discs. I can still bend over, but twisting is limited now. I feel so much better. The pain I was in presurgery has decreased about 70 percent. I go back to my doctor next week for my six month check up. I am now going back to the gym where I walk on the treadmill and swim. I limit myself to only lifting things under 10 pounds, until the fusion of my spine is all the way healed. I went to a very good spine institute in New York City. This surgery was very expensive. My surgeon alone was $70,500. And then I had two other surgeons assisting him. Gratefully, my health insurance paid for everything. I hope this information is helpful for you. I strongly recommend surgery. I feel so much better about my body image and the pain has decreased immensely.
