Posted by Steve on 9/23/2006, 2:21 am So in a nutshell, I didn't use the brace the way I was supposed to, and as a result, when my spine finally fused, I ended up with a curve of around 30 degrees. I'm now 41, and while I'm not disabled, my back gives me trouble on a daily basis. The only thing I can do to relieve the pain is to bend over backward on the edge of my bathtub to crack my back, sort of simulating the spinal traction machines that chiropractors have (can't afford a chiropractor). I wish I could go back in time and wear the brace the way I was supposed to. Is there any hope for someone like myself? Can I / should I get surgery for this? I'm pretty sure my curve is still only 30 degrees, not enough to really look physically deformed, but I wonder what that's going to be like 20-30 yrs from now, when I start to get other complications on top of the scoliosis?

I was diagnosed with scoliosis when I was younger. At that time, the curve wasn't tremendously severe, not enough to necessitate surgery. I was given a Boston brace. I was supposed to wear it all the time, 24/7, except when taking a shower. Unfortunately I didn't do as I was told. I was quite irregular about how often I wore it. If I managed to wear it through the whole school day, I'd usually take it off as soon as I got home. Other times I'd wear it to bed, then I'd be too exhausted to wear it to school. I didn't know any other teens who had scoliosis, so I felt all alone, didn't have any support (the internet didn't exist back then.)
