Hi everyone...
Working in the restaurant industry in San Diego is a joke....
I have 8 years of experience in fine dinning, have been to culinary school in France, worked in France, as well as in NYC and some of San Diego's finest restaurant. I have a first degree sommelier diploma too and still cant find a decent job in this city.
I had 3 interviews last week.. Restaurant owners who want a manager/ sommelier and want to pay you a whooping 12 bucks an hour. Am I the only one who find this insulting?
Do they think that I have invested money in wine tasting, wine books and spent hours studying wine and paid 450 dollars to pass the test just to make 12 bucks an hour?
I also interviewed with this guy downtown, he owns a so called fine dinning restaurant. He wants a manager but cant afford one ( good start ) so he offers me 10 bucks an hour plus I get to wait table. In exchange I will have to manage the place, places wine orders and so on... He complained that his staff isnt professional enough yet was scared to hire me ( didnt want the job anyways ) because he is affraid that I will be too demanding with the staff ( how does he knows? We never worked together, I d just expect the staff to be professional and know the wine list and menu, which they should... I even wanted to start a wine programm and train all of them on wine ). So this guy complains that his staff sucks , yet refuse to pay a manager decently and doesnt want the manager to change things around....
If someone knows a good place to work in Southern CA.... You know who to email to !!!
Jerome
