In my previous ultimate lives I have played in core leagues using a system similar to what Sam mentioned and it was a lot of fun.
You get to develop a rapport with your team. There seems to be more time to develop interesting offenses and defenses. And best of all, you can play with your friends. Sure there were dynasties which developed, but there were always challengers. It was a blast.
I wouldn't want to do it every league, but every other league would be fine by me.
