The butt does show the age, but it is not the only criteria. The right butt cheek has the date in Roman Numerals and will also say Barbie by Mattel. Later vintage dolls say "Midge/Barbie". The left cheek has a regular number. That is just a Mattel code for the factory where the torso was made, and is not an indication of the dolls age. Keep in mimd that little girls, as well as other collectors, often switch heads on dolls. Also, Mattel was a thrifty company and used doll parts untill they were all used up, so dolls that say 1958 (in roman Numerals) are not always the #1,2 or 3. The early torsos were solid, some smelled like crayons. The early dolls also faded, sometimes to nearly white.After #3 or 4, the torsos were hollow. There are websites that help identify the dolls. www.google.com, type in vintage barbie. www.barbarapeterson.com will give you a good idea as to what to ask. EBay too. Hope this helps. D.
